Since 2009:
Founder of the San Elizario Historic Art District and spearheaded the rehabilitation project of the San Elizario Historic District.
In an effort to preserve the History, Heritage and Culture of the area, Al Borrego has been deeply involved
in investigation of the history of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. He has developed relationships along the trail
and other relevant locations. His preservation efforts include educational projects through developing conferences, attending
speaking engagements and events. He has done extensive reseseach at the National Archives in Mexico City, State and Municipal
Archives in Durango, Jimenez, Parral, Chihuahua, and Queretaro, MX. Current projects include working with the
National Institute of Archeology and History (INAH) in Mexico to get the remainder of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, that is
not part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation (the Mexico and US portions that are not included) nominated and
designated. The team working on the project has made great strides on the project. He has also created a bond between many cities
on the Camino Real through the International Sister Cities Project. This will continue to build a relationship on the
Camino to further economic development, tourism development, and basic community pride along the route. Currently there are
23 Sister Cities on the Camino in Spain. Mexico, Texas, and New Mexico as a result of this project. Mr Borrego is visiting 8
additional cities, in 2024, that will be added in August 2024. Mr Borrego works closely with other organizations to create avenues
that will continue to add long term projects and efforts that will be the mainstay of the Camino Real for generations.
Mr Borrego has a continuous list of work and projects that promote the history, culture, and heritage of the area.
